Shanghai Airlines Economy Class is Great

Shanghai Airlines, a fully owned subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, delivers an impressive travel experience even in Economy Class. My recent journey with them was nothing short of excellent, blending comfort, convenience and quality service. I did not have high expectations for this relatively unknown airline, but oh boy, did they blow me away! Let me take you through the highlights of my trip.

Is Shanghai Airlines in SkyTeam?

Lets address the elephant in the room: Shanghai Airlines is a full member of the SkyTeam alliance, thanks to its ownership by China Eastern Airlines. As a holder of ITA Airways Executive status (SkyTeam Elite Plus), I was thrilled to discover that SkyPriority perks were fully honored without any hesitation. From priority check-in to lounge access, the process was smooth and hassle-free.

Check-In Process Needs Improvement

While Shanghai Airlines excels in many areas, the check-in process is one aspect that could be improved. Unfortunately, the airline does not have a functional online check-in system. The check-in process ends with an API error and sure enough, the domain the website tries to access does not even exist.

If you did not book your ticket directly through the China Eastern Airlines website, you are unable to manage your booking online. However, there is a workaround for selecting your seat in advance. China Eastern Airlines provides access to a special website where you can choose your seat, even if managing your booking isn’t possible. You may need to add your honorific to your name if you get an error, so in my case MIKAMR instead of MIKA.

Once on board, it is quite comfortable

Spacious Comfort in seating

As someone over 190 cm tall, legroom is often a concern when flying economy. However, Shanghai Airlines exceeded my expectations. The seats were surprisingly spacious, with generous legroom that allowed me to stretch out comfortably. The ergonomic design of the seats also ensured good back support, making the two-hour flight a pleasant experience. Whether you’re tall or just appreciate some extra breathing space, the seating arrangement on Shanghai Airlines is definitely a win.

Food and Drinks – A Culinary Delight in the Sky

Shanghai Airlines truly shines in its in-flight catering. Despite being a relatively short two-hour flight, the meal service was top-notch. Passengers were offered two meal options, both of which were thoughtfully prepared and flavorful. I opted for the beef, which featured a delicious combination of rice, stir-fried vegetables and tender beef in a savory sauce.

The meal was quite good

The free beverage selection was equally impressive. From refreshing juices to soft drinks and even wine, the choices catered to a wide range of preferences. The attentive cabin crew ensured that glasses were refilled promptly and with a smile. This level of service and attention to detail in catering truly sets Shanghai Airlines apart from many other carriers in the same category.

In-Flight Entertainment: Plenty to Enjoy

Shanghai Airlines offers a robust in-flight entertainment system that ensures passengers have plenty to do during their journey. The selection of movies was extensive, featuring a mix of international blockbusters and Chinese favorites. This made it easy to find something enjoyable to watch, no matter your preferences.

A pretty decent in-flight entertainment system

Additionally, the airline provides free WiFi for the first 15 minutes of use. Slow connection costs 50 CNY and high-speed internet 80 CNY. While this is a thoughtful touch, travelers should be aware that the connection is routed through mainland Chinese internet servers, meaning you will need to navigate the limitations of the Great Firewall of China. Popular websites and apps that are commonly blocked in China might not be accessible, so plan accordingly if you intend to stay connected.

Final Thoughts

My experience flying Shanghai Airlines Economy Class was nothing short of excellent. From SkyTeam privileges to spacious seating and exceptional catering, every aspect of the journey was designed with passenger comfort and satisfaction in mind. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler, Shanghai Airlines offers a compelling choice for both short-haul and long-haul flights.

If you’re considering a trip and want an economy class experience that punches well above its weight, I wholeheartedly recommend Shanghai Airlines. Safe travels!
