Flying short-haul in business class can be a hit-or-miss experience, but Cathay Pacific’s short-haul business class offering leaves a lasting impression. On my recent flight from Taipei to Osaka, I had the chance to experience their service; From the moment I boarded, the crew’s warmth and attentiveness made me feel right at home. Cathay Pacific’s crew consistently delivers excellent service, and this flight was no exception. They were friendly without being overbearing and went above and beyond to make the experience special.
Check-In and Boarding
The journey started smoothly at Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport, where the check-in process was impressively quick. The ground staff were efficient, polite, and got me on my way in no time. The ticket included fast track security and priority tags for my bags.
There were separate lines for boarding for first, business and economy class passengers. As the flight did not have a first class, it meant that I was quite by myself in the first class queue with my oneworld Emerald status.
The Seat
The business class seat on this short-haul flight wasn’t fully lie-flat, but it came close. With a comfortable recline and ample legroom, it’s leagues ahead of European short-haul business class products. In particular, Finnair’s short-haul offering feels like an economy seat with a blocked middle, which can hardly be compared to Cathay’s thoughtfully designed cabin. Cathay’s seats provided enough comfort to relax and enjoy the flight properly, even on this shorter route.
Food and Drinks
The dining experience was a highlight of the journey. The food was delicious, with a variety of well-prepared options to suit different tastes. The menu offered several choices, ensuring there was something to satisfy every palate, whether you preferred light dishes or something heartier. Each dish was presented with care, showcasing a level of quality you’d expect from Cathay Pacific.
The drink service was equally impressive. With an ample drink list featuring a variety of wines, spirits and non-alcoholic options, there was no shortage of choice. The staff were incredibly generous, pouring me what felt like an entire glass of Bailey’s – no complaints there! The Cathay Delight and Cloud Nine, their signature mocktail and cocktail, were pleasant treats, both perfectly refreshing and flavorful. The care and attention to detail in their meal and beverage service made it feel like a premium experience.
In-Flight Entertainment
Cathay Pacific’s in-flight entertainment on this flight was exceptional for a short-haul route. The screen was sharp and responsive, making it easy to navigate the extensive library of movies and TV shows. To top it off, they provided noise-canceling headsets, which were a fantastic touch and really elevated the overall experience. Whether you wanted to catch up on the latest blockbusters or enjoy a quiet moment, the entertainment system had you covered.
There was also WiFi, but it was not free, even in business class. A message pass was $3.95, a 1-hour pass $9.95 and the entire flight $12.95.
Final Thoughts
Cathay Pacific’s short-haul business class is a class apart, offering an experience that blends comfort and exceptional service with a thoughtful touch. From the fast check-in in Taipei to the friendly crew, excellent seat, delicious food and top-notch in-flight entertainment, it was a journey worth remembering. While it may not offer a fully lie-flat seat, the product far outshines its European competitors, especially Finnair, and sets a high bar for regional business class travel.
If you’re considering flying short-haul business class in Asia, Cathay Pacific should definitely be at the top of your list.
